Dairy Causes Inflammation feat. Mark Hyman and Mikhaila Peterson

Posted:

A recent interview of Dr. Mark Hymen by Mikkhaila Peterson made various claims about dairy intake that are simply NOT true. Hymen claimed that 75% of people were lactose intolerant (false) and that dairy could increase inflammation (false) and various other false health claims about dairy. In this video we will specifically focus on his claims of 75% of the population being lactose intolerant and dairy’s effects on inflammation

Casein does not increase inflammation or alter gut microbiota:

A1 Casein causes inflammatory response in people who self identify as lactose intolerant but not A2 Casein:

Dairy consumption may decrease CRP and other markers of inflammation:

Dairy intake associated with lower IL-6 levels:

Increasing dairy intake does not increase CRP (inflammation):

Prevalence of lactose intolerance

Children: 0-19%
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29222879/

Global prevalence of lactose malabsorption is 55%. As high as 70% in the middle east and as low as 28% in parts of europe:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28690131/

Lactose malabsorption is NOT the same thing as lactose intolerance & the majority of people with LM do NOT have LI:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20186234/

In North America lactose malabsorption is divergent amongst populations:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3140651/

  • 21% for Caucasians
  • 75% for African Americans
  • 79% for native Americans
  • 51% for hispanics

Only high fat dairy (not low fat) is associated with cancer risk:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33397132/

Most of the risk of dairy associated with cancer is driven by high fat dairy & it’s association with prostate cancer, but even this association is very inconsistent:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089741/

Dairy is associated with improved body composition amongst kids 6-18 years old:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30839054/

Dairy improves fat loss and attenuates muscle loss during caloric restriction:

Dairy intake associated with improved lean body mass and blood lipids:

Dairy intake improves bone mineral density:
